【DEMON SLAYER・Kimetsu no Yaiba】”Fox mask” and Japanese history

DEMON SLAYER

My name is Inumarudashi.

In this blog, I will explain the relationship between the popular anime Demon Slayer and the “fox mask” that appears in it.

Since the “fox mask” has been handed down to Japan for a long time, it turned out that the Demon Slayer, which is set in the Taisho era, has a historical connection.

I will explain it in an easy-to-understand manner, so please take a look to the end. I’m sorry if the my English is difficult to understand.

I would be grateful if you could point it out in the comments.

You can find post updates on twitter and instagram. Please follow me on twitter and instagram.

General meaning of fox mask

It is generally said that the fox mask is for warding off evil, and you can get it at the shrine.

In some parts of Japan, it is still a tradition to wear a mask or decorate a room.

Why the fox mask is a ward off evil?

The fox is said to have been the messenger of Inari-san, that is, the god of the mountains ,the god of the rice fields.

And as a messenger of God, it was said that he would come down from the mountain in spring to protect the growth of rice, and return the mountain after seeing harvesting in autumn.

From there, it has been praised as being a messenger of God to ward off evil. And as a fox mask, it give warding off evil to people now.

What is worrisome here is why the fox became a messenger of God.

The reason is that the cycle of getting rid of the rats that came down from the mountain in the spring of the fox and returning to the mountain in the fall helped people so much that people began to think of it as a messenger from God.

Relationship with Demon Slayer

In Demon Slayer, Urokodaki gives Sabito , Makomo, Giyu, Tanjiro a fox mask made of wood carving, before the final selection.

At this time, Mr. Uroko hands over the mask to Tanjiro as a amulet mask.It seems that this act had the desire of the mountain god to protect him from disasters and to have Tanjiro come back alive in the final selection held on the mountain called Mt. Fujisatsu.

The fox’s mask breaks during the battle with the demon, but when the amulet breaks, it is thought that it was a substitute for disaster.

In fact, Because Tanjiro returned safely, fox skin may have had the effect of a fox mask.

④Hinokagutsuchi

It is said that the fox was a messenger of the god of fire called Hinokagutsuchi.

It may not seem Hinokagutsuchi have relationship with the Demon Slayer.

But, Taisho secret revealed that there was Kagutsuchi as another title proposal for Demon Slayer.

Furthermore, Hinokagutsuchi is said to be involved in Breathing, Hinokami Kagra, and Nezuko overcoming the sun.

If I have a chance, I will introduce this consideration in the future.

At the end

This time I talked about the relationship between Demon Slayer and the fox mask.

I found out that it was made by comparing it to history, and it was a lot of fun to research.
