DEMON SLAYER

I run a blog that introduces Japanese animation and its relationship to Japanese culture.

①Is the Twelve Kizuki inspired by a disease?

There are many motifs in Demon Slayer.

As a simple example, demons are based on the motif of contagious diseases. They are only motifs, and not the entire character is bound to that image.

②Upper Rank’s motif

Upper Rank Demon is based on the motif of infectious diseases.

The numbers on Upper Rank Demon match the numbers on the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare’s classification of infectious diseases.

Incidentally, all these infections were prevalent in the Taisho era, the era of DEMON SLAYER.

Upper Rank1 Kokushibo

It’s the Black Death, a category 1 infectious disease.

It is also called plague.

The name is so easy to understand that it could be called a hint.

It is pronounced “kokusibyo” in Japanese, and is very similar to kokushibo.

It seems that the only elements of the plague are the name itself and the fact that it is the strongest.

Upper Rank2 Doma

It’s the Tuberculosis, a category 2 infectious disease.

Tuberculosis is a disease that affects the lungs and is the motif of Doma’s “skill that causes necrosis of the lungs when inhaled.

Upper Rank3 Akaza

It’s the Measles, a category 3 infectious disease.

Measles is a disease that is treated as a rite of passage, where you get it once before you grow up (and if you don’t recover, you die), which is consistent with Akaza’s rite of passage.

Upper Rank4 HanTengu

It’s the leprosy, a category 4 infectious disease.

Leprosy is pronounced “Hansen” in Japanese.

Leprosy is also associated with an electric chattering sensation in the body, which is also consistent with HanTengu’s skill.

Upper Rank5 Gyokko

It is probably amoebic dysentery, a category 5 infectious disease.

The reason why the Gyokko looked different from the others was probably because amoebic dysentery is an infectious disease caused by microorganisms called protozoa.

Upper Rank6 Dakki・GyuTaro

It is syphilis, a category 5 infectious disease (infections are limited to class 5).

It is certain that she has syphilis, as her sister’s name was Ume before she died, and her territory was a brothel.

At the end

This time I introduced the Twelve Kizuki’s motifs.

If there is anything else you would like to know, please let us know in the comments on the SNS.

Thank you for reading to the end.
