DEMON SLAYER

Hello. My name is Inumarudashi.

This time, I explain the clothes used in Demon Slayer with comparing them to Japanese history.

Taisho era background

Demon Slayer is set in the Taisho era.

In a nutshell, the Taisho era was a time when a Japanese-Western eclectic culture that combined “Japanese” culture and “Western” culture became popular.

Under the growth of capitalism, free thought spread to the people, and a culture called “Taisho Roman” was born.

Western food and clothes spread to many people, and it was a bright era that could not be imagined from Demon Slayer.

①Kimono

Tanjiro’s younger sister, Nezuko, and the doctor, Tamayo, are wearing kimono.

Women often wear floral kimonos and brightly colored kimonos. Actually, Nezuko also wears a pink kimono, and Tamayo also wear a floral kimono.

In the Taisho era, most people wore kimono.

Clothes were still expensive in this era and could only be bought by noble people.

In fact, most of the people in the city of Demon Slayer also wear kimono.

By the way, this is the cityscape of Asakusa.

Clothes

Next is clothes.

In reality, only noble people wore clothes, and even Demon Slayer shows that a few people wear clothes.

For example, in the scene where Muzan Kibutsuji is pretending to be a human, he and his family wore clothes.

Since Muzan is impersonating, he is probably impersonating a noble person.

Also, his wife is wearing a hat. In this era, hats were a proof of a gentleman.

Although it is not seen in Demon Slayer, it seemed that some people wear hat with kimono because hat was relatively cheap.

③Kimono and clothes

The Taisho era is said to be an era of Japanese and Western eclecticism, and that culture is also reflected in the way kimono is worn.

At Demon Slayer, Yushiro wears this outfit.

In this way, Yushiro wears a shirt, which is clothes, and a kimono on it.

Even if you casually wear a kimono, the background of the times is projected in this way.

At the end

This time, I introduced how to wear the clothes and kimono of the character of Demon Slayer.

Demon Slayer is popular because the story is interesting and the characters are cool, but it is actually made in detail.

There are still more anime that I would like to introduce in relation to Japanese culture and history, so please continue to read this blog. See you.
