Hello. My nickname is Inumarudashi.
This time I would like to introduce the ranks that appear in “Demon Slayer” and their kanji characters.
I think the text in the original story is in English, but the illustrations use the kanji characters as they are.
If you are interested in the meanings of these kanji, please read on.
In this way, I will introduce the relationship between Japanese culture and Japanese animation.
You can find post updates on twitter and instagram. Please follow me on twitter and instagram.
①Type of Rank
First, let’s look at the different types of rank.
Ranking of strength | rank | how to read |
1 | 甲 | KINOE |
2 | 乙 | KINOTO |
3 | 丙 | HINOE |
4 | 丁 | HINOTO |
5 | 戊 | TSUCHINOE |
6 | 己 | TSUCHINOTO |
7 | 庚 | KANOE |
8 | 辛 | KANOTO |
9 | 壬 | MIZUNOE |
10 | 癸 | MIZUNOTO |
The order and types of rank are as shown in the diagram above. Everyone who joins the “DEMON Slayer” corps starts from “MIZUNOTO”.
“HASHIRA” is not a rank, and people in “HASHIRA” are in “KINOE”.
②What do these kanji mean?
In fact, these Chinese characters were conceived in ancient China and brought to Japan.
They are called “ETO” (the Chinese zodiac) and are used to indicate the calendar.
In terms of reading, they are applied to the five elements, and two each are assigned to wood(“KI”), fire(“HI”), earth(“TSUCHI”), metal(“KO”), and water(“MIZU”), as well as yin and yang.
In Japan, Yang is the elder brother(“E”) and Yin is the younger brother(“TO”), and together they are called KINOE, KINOTO, HINOE, and so on.
These readings were then applied to 甲,乙,丙,丁,戊,己,庚,辛,壬,癸.
③Why is the calendar used for rank?
The answer to this question is that in the Taisho era (1912-1926), the period in which the “Demon Slayer” takes place, this calendar was also used as a counting system for numbers.
Therefore, it simply became KINOE, KINOTO, and so on, from the strongest to the weakest.
④At the end
In this article, I introduced the rank used in the work of “Demon Slayer”.
